Ibrahim ibn Adham, ascetic Sufi saint, finished his prayers in his room and saw two angels sitting in the corner, writing something on a piece of paper. He approached them and asked them, “What are you writing?” with tender curiosity.
“We are writing the names, in the list, of those people who loves Allah” one of the angel replied.
“So can you tell me whether my name is on the list or not?” the Sufi saint asked politely.
After checking the list from top to bottom they replied, “It, certainly, is not”
The Sufi saint, strangely enough, wasn’t even a bit disappointed or dishearten. Instead he replied with a warm smile across his lips and rather enthusiastically, “Then you should write my name, in the list, of those people who Loves the creature of Allah”
The next day the angels arrived again in the room where the Sufi was bowing in the glory of Allah and were writing something on a piece of paper. The Sufi came near to them and asked, “What are you writing?”
They replied, “We are writing the name, in the list, of those people whom Allah loves”
The saint asked them, “So can you tell me whether my name is on the list or not?”
The angels answered, “Ibrahim ibn Adham, your name is on top of the list”
